Agecroft Hall - Richmond, Virginia
Agecroft Hall - Richmond, Virginia
If you have wanted to see the elegance of a true Tudor estate you have the opportunity to visit one in Richmond. This house was built over 500 years ago in Lancashire, England in the late 15th century. It was the home of the Langley and Dauntesey families but at the end of the 19th century the house fell into disrepair and in 1925 was sold at auction.
At the auction the house was purchased by Richmond resident Thomas C. Williams, Jr. and had the whole thing dismantled, crated, and shipped to Richmond where it was carefully reassembled in the Windsor Farms area of Richmond.
The house today stands in a setting similar to it's original home in England with gardens and beauty for you to visit and enjoy.
The manor is filled with history and part of that history is told by the things that are on display such as the 160 lantern clock which only tells the hour of the day, not the minutes. There is also a 1566 portrait of William Dauntesey that had been originally hung on the walls of Agecroft in England and now is in the house in Virginia. You will also be able to see the bed that is of painted wood from the 17th century, way before that was a common practice. The house has items dating from 1485 to 1660 for you to see and study. What a wonderful addition to your Virginia vacation experience.
To add to your experience you will be able to see the wonderful landscape designed by Charles Gillette which reflect the order and opulence of English gardens. Just sniff the wonderful fragrance of the garden blooms and see the sunken garden with the wonderful colors and variety of annuals.
There are clipped herbs of the knot garden, a collection of exotic plants and a living exhibit of medicinal, flavoring and aromatic plants. The sunken garden is based on the pond garden at England's Hampton Court Palace.
